About MSG and PST File 

A PST file called Personal Storage Table (.pst) file, is a Microsoft Outlook Data File stores a user’s Outlook data for POP3, IMAP & web-based mail accounts,including all mail folders & the items within the folders, such as received and sent emails, email attachment files, to do list items and appointments, contacts list and more.

Personal Storage Table files are used by all edition of Microsoft Outlook, from –

Early versions PST files of Outlook (Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002) were stored in ANSI format and the maximum size of 2GB storing capacity, while former later variation save the PST file in Unicode format and the maximum size is 20GB (Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007) or 50GB (Outlook 2010).

For Windows Vista and later OS, Outlook PST files are stored by default in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ for Outlook 2007 and in C:\Users\%username%\Documents\Outlook Files for Outlook 2010. 

PST files can be compressed using the “Compact Now” option in Outlook’s Data File Management area, and corrupted PST files can be fix using any third-party application.

A similar Outlook data file known as called OST file, or Offline storage table (.ost) file, Its a Microsoft Outlook’s Cached Exchange Mode feature.

MSG File:- The Outlook MSG (.msg) file format is a syntax for saving a single Message file, such as an email file, an appointment, a contact, a task, and so on, in a file. Any properties that are available on that single file, including attachment objects, are also present in the MSG file.

MSG files is based on the CFB_3 coding format which implements a simplified file system through a in series collection of storage objects and stream objects. MSG specifies five initial storage elements, each are representing one of main component of the Message object resettlement and a number of streams are contained and saved within those storages, each stream representing a property  of that initial component.

The storages component’s are:

  • Recipient object storage point
  • Attachment object storage point
  • Embedded Message object storage point
  • Custom attachment storage point
  • Named property mapping storage point

Line-up properties in MSG must be either Unicode or non-Unicode. The .msg File Format does not allow the presence of both cumulatively.
